The FJ-2 Fury jet was manufactured by North American. It
was introduced to the Corps in 1954. The length was 40'2" and the wing
span was 34'6". Power was supplied by a single Pratt & Whitney J-48
engine which developed 7,250 pounds of thrust. Approximate cost was $707,000
and hourly cost was $50. Armament was four 20mm cannons mounted on the
sides of the air intake.
Remember the thrill of punching through the speed of sound? And the wing tips moving up and down about 3 feet from normal? Getting a certificate was proof of how special it was! And unusual!!
