Japan 1958-1959
I was assigned to Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 17, Marine Wing Service Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing at the Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni, Japan in August 1958. The tour ended in October, 1959. During that time, I was the Industrial Relations Officer for the Air Station. As such, I was responsible for personnel actions relating to all Japanese employees at the base. I maintained flying proficiency in a small twin engine utility aircraft (SNB).
It was an extremely rewarding tour which enabled me to get to know the Japanese people and their unique characteristics. I departed Japan with the utmost respect for the Japanese and their customs and hold that regard to this day. The memories of co-workers and friends there are cherished.
Dotty was not permitted to accompany me on the tour. She delivered our first child, Steve, on December 30, 1958. What a joy it was being reunited with Dotty and seeing Steve for the first time almost a year after his birth!!!
