Boat ride on the Grand Canal

Zhouzhuang, China

May 5, 2002

This part of our tour covered the Grand Canal from Zhouzhuang to land about an hours drive from Suzhou.  We had the entire boat to ourselves and the water was calm so the journey was a pleasant one.  Aside from fishing we saw lots of duck farms along the edges of the canal.

That's a three wheeled bike on the front of the boat and a person sitting on what looks like a park bench.  There's another bike lying beside a "passenger" at the rear.  The sound of the single cylinder engines makes you wonder if they will make it to the next dock but they do.

Now isn't this the fanciest dock you ever saw!  We just parked up along the shore and debarked to a waiting bus.  What efficiency and coordination.  At the right is a barge which was being slowly loaded by a man and woman shoveling their precious load on one shovel at a time.
