Palace of Parliament and Boulevard

Ceausescu started this building, second in size only to the Pentagon, in 1984.  He was the communist ruler or Romania from 1965 until his execution in 1989.  At the time of his death only the exterior and three rooms had been completed.  It rises 276 feet above ground and is nearly as deep under ground.  Today, Romania's Parliament and headquarters of the International Conference Center occupy some of its 6,000 rooms.

Most of those from our bus managed to get in this picture.  Bill Ackermann took it.  Others who wanted a shot were doing the same.

This beautiful boulevard is directly opposite the Palace and was built by Ceausescu to house all of the important persons who would work in the Palace.

With the Palace of Parliament in the foreground, this view from a Romanian promotional booklet gives an idea of the magnitude of Ceausescu's projects.
