Liechtenstein
Heart of Europe Tour
American Express Vacations
July 8, 1988
About midroute between Lucerne, Switzerland and Munich, Germany is the small principality of Liechtenstein. It's total area covers only 61 square miles, making it slightly smaller the Washington, D.C. The population, around 30,000, speak German.
The country has managed to stay neutral since abandoning its army in 1868. It has also escaped damage from all European wars since then. Women were granted the right to vote just four years prior to our visit there.
We spent time looking through the shops and enjoying lunch while the natives seemed anxious to have our business.
Below is a picture of Vaduz Castle which overlooks the main commercial area.
